We understand what it's like to read absolutely terrible reviews for registry cleaning products. We've done the research and we've found most review sites re-hash verbiage from "splash pages" provided by the software makers. Either that or they provide a few very vague sentences that give absolutely NO details about the product they're reviewing. One has to wonder if they’ve ever used the software at all. Reg Cleaner Review> is a "different" type of registry cleaner review site. We don't smack you with a bunch of spam, we don't trick you with gimmicks, and we certainly don't give half-assed reviews. We're here to provide completely unbiased information so you can make an informed decision on the registry cleaning software of your choice.
If you're new to registry cleaning software and really don't fully comprehend its benefits, we suggest you take a few moments to read Anatomy of a Windows Registry and Fixing Corrupt Registry Files. They'll give you a solid foundation as to what the registry is and your available options to clean it.
Now, onward to the RegSweep review!
As the name implies, RegSweep is an application that sweeps your registry clean of broken keys, invalid elements, and missing keys. It's not unlike other entries in the registry cleaning market, offering features such as backups, deep cleaning, and a few management tools. Its main aim is to clean your registry and sweep away all the junk and problematic keys that are slowing your system down. Let's find out how it compares to other registry cleaning apps.
If you've used RegCure or Registry Easy before, the interface for RegSweep will look and feel very familiar. It uses the same concept of a single integrated environment for all functionality, with a series of access button aligned to the left. As indicated in our RegCure review and Registry Easy review, this type of interface makes for a very pleasurable experience. It's instantly accessible to casual users and manages to keep the main content window clean and clear while focusing on the task at hand. There's a lack of innovation and flash, but navigation is simple and it only takes a few clicks to perform a task. It's obvious that the application was targeted squarely at the growing base of casual users. The learning curve is low and accessibility is high. Overall it's a great interface that we've seen several times before.
Those looking for a horde of features or some innovation will be disappointed by RegSweep. It doesn't pack as much punch for the dollar as other registry cleaners and the limited feature set is disappointing.
Manage startup
One feature that's found in just about every registry cleaner to hit the market these days is the Windows startup manager. With the startup manager you can dictate which applications and services run when your system boots up. For example, if the Google updater is running on every boot-up, you can use the startup manager to remove it from the startup list. This is nothing more than an easy-to-use graphical interface that replaces the cryptic built-in Windows startup manager. That is, it's not really a feature that you don't already have available to you in your operating system. Still, RegSweep is aiming their application at casual users and this feature will make managing their startup easier.
Backup utility
Essential for any registry cleaning application is a backup utility. With this utility you can backup your registry (always recommended before fixing registry errors). Backups are added insurance in case an essential key is removed from the registry. It takes some of the risk out of performing deep scans and cleanings.
Smart Update
RegSweep is self-updating. When you launch the application, it will automatically ping the RegSweep servers to see if a new version is available. The nice thing about this feature is you'll never have to manually visit the website, check for new versions, and manually install them. The application will do it all automatically.
Checks and Balances
What good is a registry cleaning application without a deep scan? RegSweep does a decent job at checking for and cleaning a variety of common problems. Here are some of the things RegSweep will scan for and clean.
- Scans for Invalid Program shortcuts
- Removes Duplicate files
- Checks invalid Active X, OLE and COM
- Checks invalid System services
- Checks invalid Class Keys
- Checks Shell Extension
- Checks invalid Help Files
- Checks Invalid CLSID/Typelib/Interface Entries
- Checks Invalid Shared known DLL’s
- Checks invalid Paths
- Checks Application Path Keys/Orphan References
- Checks Invalid Fonts
- Checks Invalid File Types//Extensions/Entries
- Checks Invalid Sounds
With RegSweep there is no registry compactor, no scheduler, no IE object manager, and no innovation. It's disappointing that RegSweep didn't add more features to the base package.
Although RegSweep is severely lacking in a robust feature-set, it boasts an impressive array of checks and balances with its scan and does a stellar job cleaning the system (more on that next).
Performance is important when it comes to registry sweeping. If you need to wait 15 or more minutes for a scan, you want to make sure that scan is picking up every single possible registry issue on your computer. We're happy to say RegSweep did a stellar job on our testing unit! Though the system we used for RegSweep was a bit different from our standard TESTER PCs we normally use for reviews. The sad truth is we ran out of untouched old desktop systems! As we stated in our Registry Easy review, our testing systems are donated to us by Save Crazy. Since we only got a handful of older systems that had never seen a registry cleaner in their virtual lives, we had to turn towards something different for RegSweep. We used an old Dell Latitude laptop running at a speedy clip of 233MHZ. It was loaded with 4GB of memory though, so at least it isn't a completely dead weight.
We ran RegSweep and expected it to take up to 10 minutes to complete its system sweep. We were both surprised and somewhat concerned when it completed it's scan in less than 5 minutes and returned about 170 errors. The performance was outstanding, but did it really catch all of the errors? Our initial thought was that we missed having some scanning options turned on, so we checked. No problem there. All options were checked. So, yes it does scan very fast! After we cleaned the system we just had to install our best registry cleaning software pick to see if it could pick up errors RegSweep failed to find. RegCure was installed and fired away. The results? Surprising! RegCure DID find some issues that RegSweep did not, but the total left behind was a mere 6 errors. Although not perfect, RegSweep is a stellar performer.
So, how about reliability? After all, RegSweep did leave behind 6 errors that RegCure was able to pick up. We'll give RegSweep the benefit of the doubt and assume that if we were to run it again it would have picked up the issues. Tester systems are not perfect, nor are they all created equal. It’s possible some service or process was running in the background during the RegSweep scan that interfered in it’s ability to pick up every issue.
With a 24/7 technical support team, you can get the support you need when you need it. You can contact support directly through their website from your account interface. The experienced and friendly support team will answer any question you may have for them, so at least you're in good hands.
We're a bit disappointed that some of the advanced customer support functions, such as remote-assistance by RegSweep technicians, are add-ons. It would have been nice if this was a standard feature.
RegSweep is an impressive performing registry cleaner that packs quite the punch in terms of speed and accessibility. Deep scans are performed quite quickly and manage to uncover most registry issues. Our biggest gripe with RegSweep is the lack of advanced features. Competing registry cleaning software produces the same results as RegSweep (albeit not as fast), but also include a slew of options such as registry compactors, schedulers, and even web browser object managers.
We recommend RegSweep for casual users who just want to press a button and have their registry cleaned fast! If you're not too concerned with management tools and other bells and whistles, you'll probably like RegSweep. It’s easy to use and does what it claims to do. At the very least give it a download and try it yourself.
